Expats’ voting in vacant parliamentary seats runoff concluded

The runoff for the Egyptian Parliament’s complementary election on some vacant legislative seats was concluded on Saturday evening for the Egyptian expats. The runoff for locals is set to be held in the country on January 16, 17.

The National Elections Commission received a letter from the House of Representatives on October 3, reporting the existence of three vacant seats, after three MPs of different constituencies passed away.

In Fayoum’s Tameya, the runoff is held between Mohamed Abdel Tawab who amassed 23,886 votes, and Mahmoud Fakhr el-Din known as Bassam al-Sawaf who could gather 14,378 votes, the NEC headed by Lashin Ebrahim reported, saying that the total number of electorate of the constituency amounted to 240,780 people, while the actual number of voters in the first round of this election amounted to 78,166 people.

Meanwhile in Gharbia’s Zefta, the runoff is held between Ahmed Fouda, and Ahmed Al-Gahsh who amassed 19,374 and 17,068 votes respectively, according to the commission. The electorate of the constituency amounted to 346,892 people, and only 17.36 percent of them participated in the complementary election’s first round.

Regarding Arish constituency, Mohamed al-Gaghna and Amin Gouda who amassed 5,070 and 5,913 votes respectively compete in the runoff, the commission announced. The electorate of the constituency amounted to 115,380 people. However, the turnout of the first round recorded only 16.05 percent.

The current Parliament is set to end its mission in 2020, following the end of its five-year term.

Moreover, the awaited municipal councils’ election is expected to be held in the last quarter of 2019, after carrying out standard procedures to approve the local administration law.
