Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday hailed Cameroon’s endorsement of the statute of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) Women Development Organization, saying Egypt’s hosting of this organization’s headquarters comes as an “actual reflection of the importance the Egyptian state attaches to the women’s issues”.

Being the 15th country to endorse the statute of the organization, Cameroon has handed Egypt the required quorum for launching the organization.

Choosing Egypt to host the organization’s headquarters also affirms “Egypt’s role in pushing forward these issues (of women) regionally and globally, in a way that serves the interests of Egypt and its foreign relations,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation had realized the importance of enhancing the status of women and their role in the national and regional development process, the Ministry noted.

For its part, Egypt’s National Council for Women hailed the OIC’s announcement. NCW’s head Maya Morsy expressed its appreciation of this step, saying it reflects Egypt’s keenness to empower women, as an active and main element of the development process.

Morsi clarified that the Women Development Organization will be concerned with the rights of women in the member states of the OIC, calling their presence “pressing and fundamental”.

She added that the presence of this organization will help open cooperation and coordination fields between Islamic states and international community on the issues of women.
