Egypt, UN talk international efforts to produce comprehensive political settlement in Syria

CAIRO – 15 October 2021: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen on Thursday discussed ways to coordinate various international efforts to push forward a comprehensive political settlement of the Syrian crisis, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in a statement.

Shoukry voiced Egypt’s great interest in putting an end to this crisis at all political, security and humanitarian levels, in line with the references of international legitimacy and Security Council Resolution No. 2254.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed his hope that the next round of the Constitutional Committee’s work would result in positive developments that achieve the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, Hafez said.

The UN Special Envoy for Syria praised Egypt’s balanced and supportive role in settling the crisis, Hafez said.

Egypt, a long with a number of Arab countries like the UAE, Bahrain, Jordan and others voiced their stances towards restating the Syrian membership at the Arab League since it has been suspended in 2011.

For the first time since 2011, Shoukry met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Miqdad, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez on Twitter on September 25, 2021.

Both Ministers discussed ways to end the Syrian crisis, Hafez added, noting that the meeting took place at the headquarters of the Egyptian mission in New York City, on the sidelines of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 76).

The meeting is the first of its kind since freezing Syria’s membership in the Arab League in 2011 following the Syrian revolution against President Bashar al-Assad.

Early March 2021 at a ministerial meeting for Foreign Ministers of the Arab League, Shoukry called for re-thinking of Syrian membership in the Arab League.

Recently, It has been agreed to deliver the Egyptian natural gas to the Lebanese through Jordanian and Syrian pipelines, with putting a plan of action and a timetable for its implementation, announced the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in a statement.
