Egypt fully supports political solution in Libya: Sisi

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed al-Manfy discussed Tuesday efforts to restore security and stability in Libya.

During a phone call, Sisi reaffirmed that Egypt is totally in favor of removing all foreign militants and mercenaries from Libya and ending all forms of foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Arab north African country.

He also stressed Egypt’s commitment to enhancing close coordination with the Libyan side to unify state institutions and hold the long-awaited presidential elections in Libya on December 24 as scheduled.

Sisi further reiterated Egypt’s full support of a political settlement to the Libyan crisis at bilateral, regional, and international forums, Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.

Meanwhile, Manfy expressed his sincere gratitude for Egypt’s strenuous efforts in support of Libya since the onset of its crisis.

Last October, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry proposed four measures that to ensure elections are held on time in December, while attending the international conference Libya held to support stability on its territories,

Those are:

First: Designating the tools of the implementation and observation of the withdrawal of foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign militants within a clear time frame.

Second: Implementing all the articles of the ceasefire agreement, including freezing all military agreements.

Third: Setting suitable programmes for the disarmament of members of armed groups, and the rehabilitation of those who can be reintegrated in society.

Fourth: The international community has to assume its role in ensuring that parties, that want to abandon its commitments and go around international resolutions pertinent to holding elections and the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries, are assuming their responsibilities, and are held accountable if they do not.

On Monday, President Sisi discussed with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron the latest development and updates in Libya during a phone call.

Rady added that President Macron expressed his keenness to consult and exchange views with President El-Sisi on the Libyan issue, in light of appreciation for the President’s personal efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis, reinforcing the political track.
