Egypt’s Interior Ministry decided to grant an exceptional visit to all inmates in Egyptian prisons on the occasion of the Muslim’s holy feast of Eid Al-Fitr.

The visit is an addition to the visits allocated for each of the prisoners during their jail term, which means that it will not be deducted from the number of their legalized visits.

The exceptional visit comes as part of the Ministry of Interior’s efforts to its keenness to preserve the values of human rights alongside the application of its penal policy and a modern correctional system.

In April, two exceptional visits have been granted to all inmates across Egypt on the occasion of the celebration of Sinai Liberation Day corresponding April 25th and Easter celebrations.

The two visits, per each prisoner, have been allowed at any time during the period from Monday April 26th until Monday, May 10th.

The Interior Ministry stressed that preventive measures will be adhered during the visits to avoid the spread of Coronavirus.

Egypt’s prisons in all governorates have reportedly recently witnessed a development process that confirms their commitment to implementing international human rights standards in prisons.

Healthcare has also been developed in prisons with more medical beds and cells prepared for those with special needs.

On many national occasions throughout the year, hundreds of prisoners are pardoned. Many prisoners are granted a presidential pardon on occasion of Sinai Liberation this year.

According to the constitution, the president has the right to issue pardons for convicted prisoners after consulting with the Cabinet.
