The Red Sea resort city ranked sixth among the top 10 diving areas in the world in the British Dive Magazine’s annual competition.
The magazine reported that the Red Sea contains more than 400 species of registered coral reefs, noting that “diving has become firmly installed in the Egyptian tourism industry.”
“One of the best diving sites in the world is Ras Mohamed, followed by the Brothers’ islands located between Safaga and Qusair where tourists can find the best coral reefs and sharks ever,” according to the magazine.
The magazine also stressed that the San John reef at Marsa Alam is deemed as a combination of seamounts, coral gardens and deep-sea descent, as well as the wreckage of the sinking English ship Sisl Aljorm north of Hurghada, the most popular site for divers.
According to the UK-based magazine’s competition, Indonesia topped the ranking as the best touristic destination thanks to its biological diversity as it embraces coral reefs and marine life and pays great attention to improving the conservation of the marine environment.
For his part, Ahmed Ghalab, director of the Red Sea Reserves, said that there are more than 60 diving sites in the Red Sea.
“The marine activity represents 60 percent of the total touristic activities in the Red Sea,” Ghalab told Egypt Today.
Ghalab noted that approximately 3million tourists flock to the resort city annually to dive and exercise other marine activities.
