President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has always called for exporting moderate Islam to Africa to contribute to counter-terrorism efforts in the continent, Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa said.
The president has also been keen on constant cooperation with African states to combat terrorism and extremism, the minister added in statements to MENA on the fringe of a meeting of the parliament’s African Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
For that purpose, the Awqaf Ministry regularly dispatches its imams and preachers to many African countries, Gomaa said, highlighting the great importance President Sisi attaches to renewing the religious discourse not only in Egypt but worldwide, convinced of the prominent role of Egypt’s Al-Azhar and other moderate religious institutions in this respect.
Gomaa also stressed that Egypt spares no effort to counter extremist thought and promote moderate Islam throughout the world, especially in Africa.
Gomaaa and an African delegation, including representatives of the religious endowment ministries of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Tanzania and other states, attended the parliamentary committee meeting after their participation in the 31st International “Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue” Conference, organized by the Awqaf Ministry under the auspices of President Sisi.
