Libyan Brotherhood splits due to disagreements with current leadership of Justice and Construction Party

Divisions and conflicts has recently hit the Libyan Brotherhood, following the election of the current presidency of the Justice and Construction Party, the political arm of the Brotherhood in Libya.

The spokesperson for the Justice and Construction Party in the Brotherhood, Samira Al-Azaby, who also holds the position of Vice President of the Justice and Construction Party for Women and Youth Affairs, announced her resignation from her position and all the tasks entrusted to her due to her disagreement with the newly elected party leader in visions and goals.

Simultaneously, the head of the political department in the Brotherhood’s party, the head of the media department, the head of the youth office, and the head of the administrative and financial affairs department submitted their resignations due to the radical difference in visions and trends that dominated the party leadership in the conference last year.

A number of the resigned asserted that their withdrawal from the Brotherhood was due to the extremist tendencies of the Libyan Brotherhood, in contrast to the flexibility policy pursued by the previous leadership.

In a related context, Brotherhood leader and former Transitional Council member Mahdi Kashbour revealed on Monday that the recent resignation of Brotherhood supporter, Muhammad Sawan, after losing the elections, stressing this step confirms that the previous leadership did not establish the party according to institutional foundations, administrative systems and work rules.

It is expected that the resignation of prominent leaders from the Brotherhood-affiliated Justice and Construction Party will reinforce the divisions and differences within it before the elections expected at the end of this year, through which the Brotherhood aspires to maintain its presence in the Libyan political scene.

Three weeks ago, the Brotherhood’s Justice and Construction Party conducted internal elections that were won by Imad Al-Banani, who became the party’s head, succeeding Muhammad Sawan, who headed it for 9 years.

The Libyan Brotherhood is working to disrupt any presidential or parliamentary elections on December 24 and is demanding a referendum on the proposed constitution, which is urging Libyan Brotherhood members to participate in writing the proposed constitution, which was completed in July 2017.

In addition, the Libyan Free National Congress emphasized the need to adhere to the date of conducting the presidential and legislative elections on December 24, and call on Libyans to stand united to achieve national merit without any delay or procrastination.

The party stressed, in a statement, the necessity of conducting the elections on time without any unjustified delay or postponement, stressing the pursuit of electoral maturity to lay sound foundations for the rule of law and institutions and the peaceful transfer of power.

The statement pointed out that any deviation from the electoral approach constitutes a betrayal to Libya and its people.

The party pointed out that leading the country into more temporary stages will cause more chaos and instability.
