Egypt calls upon parties in Sudan to prioritize higher interest of homeland, national consensus

CAIRO – 25 October 2021: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement Monday saying, “Egypt is closely following the latest developments in Sudan,” and calling upon all parties in neighboring Sudan to prioritize the higher interest of the homeland as well as national consensus, within the framework of responsibility and self restraint.

The statement stressed “the importance of achieving stability and security for the Sudanese people, preserving its wealth, and dealing with current challenges in the way that guarantees the safety of the neighboring state.”

The ministry also asserted that “the security and stability of Sudan are an inseparable part of the security and stability of Egypt and the region.”

Earlier on Monday, Head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced the state of emergency all over the country, the dissolution of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council and the government, and the suspension of some articles of the constitutional document for the transitional period in Sudan.

Burhan said that a number of the political forces incited chaos and violence, and started to fight each other, which threatens Sudan’s security. He pledged commitment to the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement, and to the transition process until handing over the authority to a newly elected government by June 2023.
