Cairo – 30 October 2021: Luxor City hosts Sunday a celebration organized by United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and Egypt’s Local Development Ministry on the occasion of the World Cities Day.

The celebration is attended by UN‐Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Local Development Minister Mahmoud Sharaawy, Housing Minister Assem el Gazzar and representatives of UN agencies, development partners, private sector, NGOs and academic institutions.

Dr. Rania Hadiya, the Director of the United Nations Habitat Program in Egypt said that 70 international officials, including ministers from African countries, and 500 officials are attending the conference via video technology, in the celebration of World Cities Day held in Luxor Governorate.

Hadiya pointed out that the challenges of the sanitation and water sectors are great at the national level, especially in isolated rural areas, and that the Habitat program succeeded in applying unconventional and advanced methods to enable the state to provide the right to clean water and sanitation at the lowest cost and best quality, and natural firtlation technology was launched for the banks of rivers “River firtlation unit” in 2017 in Minya Governorate

The theme for World Cities Day 2021 is “Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience” reflecting the fact that climate change will have a huge impact on city residents with hundreds of millions of them experiencing floods, rising sea levels, storms and increasing periods of extreme temperatures.

World Cities Day was established in 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly. The first World Cities Day was held in October 2014.
