Egypt’s holdings of US Treasury bonds reach $2.24B during December 2021

CAIRO – 20 February 2022: Egypt’s holdings of US Treasury bonds increased during December 2021, marginally on an annual basis.

US Treasury data showed that Egypt’s holdings of US bonds amounted to $2.244 billion in November 2021, compared to $2.242 billion in the same month of 2020.

On a monthly basis, Egypt’s holdings of US Treasury bonds declined marginally during December 2021 at $2.249 billion, down from $2.249 billion last November.

Japan topped the list of the world’s largest holders of US bonds, with a value of $1251.3 billion ($1.251 trillion).

China came in second place with investments amounting to $1072.3 billion ($1.072 trillion), then the United Kingdom with $440.6 billion.

GCC investments in US Treasury bills and bonds rose 0.1 percent, on a monthly basis, during last December, to $221.74 billion from $221.51 billion at the end of November 2021, due to the increase in Saudi and Kuwait’s holdings.

Data from the United States Treasury Department showed that Saudi Arabia’s investments, the largest holders of Gulf countries in US bonds, rose by 2.14 percent to reach $119 billion until the end of December 2021, compared to $116.5 billion until the end of last November.
