Giza Zoo has finished preparing a new house for three young giraffes soon to arrive from South Africa, according to a Monday statement by the zoo.
The two young females and one male, exchanged with a hippopotamus and a number of rams, will come to Egypt as part of an exchange program for endangered animals resolving the issue of overcrowding in some zoos and lack of animals in others.
The new house has been constructed per the newest international design standards. The giraffe house is one of the most frequented places in the zoo, as giraffes are loved by children.
The old giraffe house will be left for the senior female giraffe Sawsan in fear for the young giraffes who are only two to three years old. Sawsan is being “rehabilitated” in a prelude to mating with the male coming from South Africa.
She is being monitored around the clock to provide her with the best nutrition and raise her spirits as she has been “depressed.” She is being fed lentil, beans, dried green beans, apples, oranges, bananas, and corn grown for her inside the zoo, as well as vitamins and minerals.
Egypt is also negotiating to take in another giraffe for Alexandria Zoo.
