Egypt reports 117 new coronavirus cases, 13 fatalities in 24 hours

The Health Ministry said Sunday night that 117 new coronavirus cases were detected, upping the total number of confirmed cases since the outbreak in the country began to 283,102.

In a statement, Spokesman for the Health Ministry Khaled Megahed said 13 patients have died from the virus over the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 16,396.

As many as 656 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 218,412 so far, the spokesman said.

Egyptian Health Minister Hala Zayed said the country is planning to locally produce 80 million vaccine doses by the end of the year to vaccinate 40 million citizens.

Egypt already produced one million Sinovac doses as part of an agreement between the Egyptian holding company for biological products and vaccines (VACSERA).

The state plans to vaccinate 40 million citizens by the end of the year, representing around 40 percent of the population.
